El Carmen, or El Carme, Valencia, is one of the districts of the Ciutat Vella in Valencia, the old city. It is located in the Centre of Valencia capital, at the North – East of the city centre, behind the Plaza de la Virgen. The area starts at the Serranos towers, heading along Muro de Santa Ana, to San Lorenzo plaza. It is one of the oldest areas in the city, where the foundations of Valencia were born.
The plaza de la Virgen is the highest point of the hill where the Romans founded the city a century before Christ. El Carmen has had many changes over the centuries, from its Muslim influence period to the Spanish times. The neighborhood grew between two walls, i.e. between the 11th century Muslim wall in the East, and the 14th century Spanish catholic wall in the West.
El Carmen is a picturesque area with narrow streets. Today it has become a dynamic neighbourhood full of restaurants and bars, where you can listen to good music and dance until dawn. It is also the place of the emblematic market of Valencia (Mercat de Valencia), a metal building that was inaugurated in 1929. The Mercat is nowadays connected to the internet to do ones shopping online.
